95-Points by Vinous.

The 2022 La Dominique is stellar. Rich, deep and beautifully layered, the 2022 impresses with its fine balance. Succulent red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and mocha all take shape in the glass. All the elements come together beautifully in a polished, notable La Dominique. Tasted two times

Blend of 88% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has won universal praise for its freshness and its polished, layered finish.

Lovely fruit here with black berry, redcurrants and tile aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, very well integrated tannins and a lightly chewy finish, showing the potential of the vintage.

Flowers, black cherries, black raspberries, wet earth, forest herbs, and a touch of crushed stone opens the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, fresh, and more importantly, the fruits express purity. The wine has lift, vivacity, spices and dark chocolate that accents the fruits. Not the most concentrated wine of the vintage, instead you find elegance, length and precision. The wine blends 88% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% ABV, 3.7 pH. The wine is aged in 50% new, French oak, and 10% amphora.

Producer Notes

  • Ideally located in the north-west of Saint-Emilion, on the edge of the appellation Pomerol. The 29 hectares of Chateau La Dominique, property of the Fayat family since 1969. are distinguished by a renowned terroir, whose plots adjoin the most famous vineyards in the region. Cheval Blanc, Figcac, La Conseillante, L´Evangile.
  • Château La Dominique is an estate in Saint-Émilion known for its Merlot-based red wine. It was rated Grand Cru Classé in the official 1955 classification of Saint-Émilion.
  • Located close to the Pomerol border, the vineyard covers approximately 29 hectares (71 acres). The majority of plantings are Merlot (89 percent) with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and an addition of Malbec in 2019. Here, a gentle slope and sandy gravel soils with slighlty more clay than its neighbor Cheval Blanc create the terroir.
  • In the winery, movement of juice and wine is done gently, powered by gravity to aid the preservation of phenolics. Grapes undergo 12-24 hours of cold maceration, and then vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The grand vin is then aged oak barrels, a majority of which are new for 16 months.
  • Records for La Dominique date back to 1690, although it was first mentioned as a wine estate with its current name in 1785. The name is derived from Dominica in the Caribbean where the owner made his fortune.
  • The estate's reputation dipped in the first half of the 20th Century and in 1969 it was bought by French industrialist Clément Fayat. Sustained investment brought about a return to form.
  • Along with Château Fayat in Pomerol and Château Clément-Pichon in the Haut-Médoc, the estates form the Vignobles Clément Fayat portfolio.
