95+ Points by Wine Enthusiast.
This is a robust, deeply concentrated wine, richly layered and densely textured in red fruit, crushed rock, sage and cedar. Grippy tannins reveal its youthful vigor and relative restraint that is not ready to rush out of the gate quite yet. Let the power deepen and develop further in the cellar and enjoy from 2028–2038.
Cellar SelectionBlend: 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot
95-Points by Wine Advocate
Blended of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Magic Nights prances out of the glass with showy notes of crème de cassis, blueberry coulis and chocolate-covered cherries plus hints of garrigue, pencil lead and beef drippings. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with muscular, energetic black fruits, supported by firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory.
- Vineyard/Production: Sourced from the "Magic Bus" (Poetry vineyard) and "Nights in White Satin" (Twin Peaks estate) blocks. It underwent 21 months of élevage in 80% new French oak.
Winemaker Notes ~ Christopher Tynan
It’s as dark as midnight and delights the taster with deep rich cassis, candied violets, lilacs, blackberry, warm summer mulberries, and melted black licorice. The wine possesses a weighty, oily texture reminiscent of melted chocolate, grilled steak drippings, iron, fig, and medjool dates. The tannins are satin smooth with the elegance and energy of the vintage taking center stage on the finish.
- Our estate vineyard blocks are named after Cliff’s favorite rock songs and albums. The name of this blend is derived from The Who’s “Magic Bus" in our Poetry vineyard and from The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin" in our Twin Peaks vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon in “Magic Bus” is planted in shallow volcanic soil and farmed to low yields, contributing structure, concentration and classic Stags Leap character to the backbone of the blend. “Nights in White Satin” is a block of Merlot that contributes a luxurious perfume, flavors of ripe, dark fruit, and plush texture.
- Cliff Lede Vineyards is a winery located in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, California. It was established in 2002 by Canadian construction magnate Cliff Lede, and produces wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The most famous wine is the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon: Poetry.
- When Lede bought the property, he asked famed viticulturalist David Abreu to replant the 24 hectares (60 acres) of vineyards. These vineyards cover steep slopes in the Stags Leap AVA, and are planted on shallow volcanic soils that stress the vines and result in concentrated, complex fruit.
- The estate is made up of two vineyards, the Poetry vineyard and the Twin Peaks vineyard, and each are separated into blocks named after some of Lede's favorite songs and albums – giving them the nickname the "Rock Blocks". In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, a tiny amount of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is grown as well.
- The Cliff Lede winery was completed in 2005. Grapes are hand-sorted then evaluated by a Pellenc optical sorting machine, which only selects the grapes that are within the parameters set by the winemaker. The grapes are fermented in tanks based on the design of Château Latour, before being aged in new French oak.
- The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in concrete eggs, giving a distinct minerality to the finished wines.
- The wines, particularly the flagship Poetry, regularly receive good reviews from the press, with the American wine critic Robert Parker calling the Cabernet Sauvignon "bottled perfection" and awarding the 2013 vintage with 100 points.
- Cliff Lede purchased the Savoy Estate in Alexander Valley in 2011. This led to the establishment of FEL Wines.
