97-Points by Jeb Dunnuck.
The 2022 Montecillo has a light wild edge that adds a good level of character to the wine, with minty wild herbs, lavender perfume, pine needles, and cassis. Full-bodied, it’s quite a jump above the other Far Mountain wines in this vintage and was the highlight of this tasting. It’s gorgeously built, with velvety richness covering its more mountainous earth notes, and it has fantastic evenness and freshness, with a great sense of place. I highly recommend that readers check out this wine.
Far Mountain – Montecillo Vineyard, Moon Mountain District
Far Mountain crafts wines from exceptional mountain vineyard sites, guided by a deep respect for place, beauty, and restraint. Montecillo Vineyard, set in the rocky soils of the Moon Mountain District, is regarded by the winery as a true Grand Cru-caliber site, producing wines of natural tannin, precision, and historic character. In the cellar, Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto take a gentle, exacting approach, allowing the vineyard’s structure and complexity to speak clearly. The resulting wines are marked by layered aromatics, seductive depth, tremendous length, and a lingering intensity that reflects the power and distinction of this remarkable mountain terroir.
Far Mountain’s story is rooted in discovery, place, and a deep belief that great wine should carry a sense of wonder.
The name Far Mountain reflects both the remote vineyard sites they work with and the emotional pull of those landscapes. For Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto, these are not simply places to grow grapes; they are places of beauty, silence, elevation, and perspective. Their connection to sites like Bald Mountain is almost spiritual: the sound of shoes on dirt and stone, the feel of the wind, and the sudden awareness of being somewhere extraordinary all inform the way they think about wine.
Their journey began after decades of experience working with leading wineries across North and South America. A spontaneous dinner in Napa with longtime friends turned into a deeper conversation about the future of California wine, life values, and what truly meaningful wine can be. From that discussion came the beginning of Far Mountain.
At its heart, Far Mountain is about seeking vineyard sites with distinct character and making wines that feel like a complete expression of place, experience, intention, and chance. The wines are meant to offer not only pleasure, but also a sense of origin: a way of capturing the beauty and energy of the mountain landscapes that inspired them.
