The 2023 Pinot Noir Maritime was the last fruit picked in this vintage. It possesses gorgeous mid-palate texture and overall depth. A blast of dark cherry/plum fruit, new leather, rose petal, chalk and exotic spice overtones all meld together in the glass. I admire this wine's tension and palate presence.
Our Maritime Estate Pinot Noir is unique amongst our wines for its pronounced savory aromatics, evoking the redwoods and wild fennel that closely surround this site. Dusty tannins and gentle red fruit are hallmarks of the Maritime Estate Pinot Noir.
Just one ridge lies between the Maritime Fields and the ocean, and a gap in the ridgeline allows the fog and wind to roll in unimpeded. It’s a profoundly ocean-impacted vineyard, with low yields and late ripening. On a clear day, the white caps of the Pacific Ocean are visible. While this is an extreme site, it’s also spectacularly beautiful.
David Hirsch planted the Maritime Fields in 1990. Just five years later, they tragically succumbed to the vine disease phylloxera. Undaunted, he replanted them. Nearly 30 years after they were first planted, we finally produced our first vintage of Maritime, in 2018. In addition to being known for its unique terroir, this wine is a celebration of David’s determination and optimism.
