98-Points by Jeb Dunnuck.

The 2016 Poggio al Granchio Brunello di Montalcino is aromatically expressive of perfectly ripe cherry, sweet herbs, dried flowers, and stony earth. There is generous purity of fruit on the palate, with mineral-rich earth, and it had the most balanced and harmonious structure in the lineup on this tasting, with present but fine-grained tannin. I love this wine for its darker mineral edge in counterpoint with crunchy and ripe fruit. It is a super-pleasurable wine right out of the gate and will continue to be so over the next 20 or more years.

  • Italy's first DOCG in July 1980, alongside Piedmont's Barolo.
  • Brunello di Montalcino is a red DOCG Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino, in the province of Siena, located about 80 km south of Florence, in the Tuscan wine region.
  • Aging

    Brunello: 4-2-4

    Brunello Riserva: 5-2-6

  • Brunello (annata): minimum 4 years of aging, including at least 2 years in wood and at least 4 months in bottle; it can be released starting January 1 of the 5th year after harvest.

  • Brunello Riserva: minimum 5 years of aging, including at least 2 years in wood and at least 6 months in bottle; release is January 1 of the 6th year after harvest.

  • Sangiovese Grosso or Prugnolo Gentile (locally Brunello): Noted for having thicker-skinned berries, and because of this, Brunello produces wines with exceptionally bold fruit flavors, high tannin, and high acidity.

  • A historical producer in Montalcino that dates back to the 1960’s, Val di Suga is a pioneer in the production of terroir-driven Brunello and the only producer making three single vineyards in three different estates. Because of the different microclimates, soils and winemaking styles, the wines show different expressions of Sangiovese.
  • Sourced from Val di Suga’s “Poggio al Granchio” 18-hectare vineyard on the South-East slope of Montalcino, rich in clay and marl soil (galestro) which delivers wine with minerality and silky tannins.
