The 2014 Merlot Reserve Mailbox Vineyard is plump, juicy and inviting. Dark stone fruit, tobacco and leather are sketched in broad strokes. Pliant and open-knit, the 2014 will drink well pretty much upon release. This, too, is very nicely done. The Merlot Reserve Mailbox Vineyard emerges from estate vineyards on Spring Mountain.

This has the depth and complexity of fruit grown in the mountains, in this case, a northwest-facing hillside high up Spring Mountain. It’s powerful and concentrated, the flavors completely filling the structure with bright intensity. Oak age has smoothed some of the corners and edges, buffing the rocky tannins with mocha notes. The wine’s freshness will carry it for five years or more.
- Robert Keenan Winery is a Napa Valley wine producer, located in the foothills of Mayacamas mountain range in Spring Mountain District. The estate produces a range of wines, focusing on the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties.
- The estate was originally planted in the 1890s to Zinfandel and Syrah, but the property was abandoned during Prohibition. It remained unoccupied until Robert Keenan purchased the estate in 1974.
- The Keenan family still owns the 69 hectare (170 acre) estate, about 19ha (48 acres) of which is planted to vines. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and planted to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot on Spring Mountain's steep, rocky mountainsides.
- The estate's top wines, the Mernet Reserve, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, are both sourced from the estate vineyards.
- When Robert Keenan organized the famous taste-off that pitted his Spring Mountain Merlots against Pomerol’s legendary — and legendarily pricey — Château Petrus back in 1989, most assumed it was something of a publicity stunt. But Robert Keenan knew something the naysayers didn’t — Spring Mountain was a world-class source. More than 20 years later, nobody’s laughing anymore.
