A youthful bright red color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is consistently one of my favorite appellation wines, and this one does not disappoint. The nose has refined spice, a floral rosy perfume, and notes of fresh red cherries, fresh mossy earth, and river rock. The palate is medium-bodied and has fantastic elegance and finesse, with pure fresh fruit and fine tannins, with just a lovely lift of spice on the finish
- J. Rochioli Vineyards and Winery is a Californian estate based in Fenton Acres in the Russian River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). The 140 acre (57 hectare) estate produces terroir-driven wines with a minimal intervention approach - mostly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- The Rochioli family has been growing grapes on its 136-acre ranch since the 1930s. In 1987, Tom Rochioli created the first Rochioli Estate Pinot Noir which Wine Spectator named “The Best Pinot Noir in America.” The Rochioli Vineyard is situated in a very diverse part of the Russian River Valley promoting diversity in the soil types, proximity to the ocean, as well as the contours of the valley, allowing for morning fog and cool evening breezes.
- The wine portfolio is divided between the Estate range and the Single Vineyard with varietal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc produced in each. In the winery, each plot is fermented seperate throughout the entire winemkaing process.
- The vineyards were planted to Pinot Noir 1968, shortly followed by Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir grapes were initially sold to wineries including Davis Bynum Winery and Williams Selyem Winery. The estate also produced wines under its own Fenton Acres label in the early 1970s. In 1983 the Fenton Acres property was renamed to Rochioli Vineyards and the estate consequently released its first Rochioli Pinot Noir vintage in 1987.
