100-Points by James Suckling.

Stunning aromas of blackcurrant, stone, blueberry and licorice. Also iodine. Floral. Perfumed. Full body, fantastic density of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate with such energy and focus. Touch of chewiness on the finish. A complex and complete wine that delivers a generosity with firmness.

Blend: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Carmenere, 7% Petit Verdot, 12% Malbec & 3% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months, 88% in French oak barrels (65% new), 12% foudres.

  • Seña, was created as a joint venture between Chilean Eduardo Chadwick and American Robert Mondavi way back in 1995. Their aim was to make a wine that would demonstrate the full potential of Chile. Seña became wholly owned by Eduardo Chadwick’s Errazuriz in 2005. His belief in Seña as a terroir wine led him to introduce biodynamic viticulture in the same year. Modelled on a Bordeaux style, it would have a Chilean soul, with its grapes grown under biodynamic farming principles in the Aconcagua Valley. Their dream was to create a wine that would be welcomed, in time, among the world's First Growths.
  • The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (typically 55 to 60 percent) with Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its hillside vineyard extends to 42 hectares (104 acres) on a range of soils and is slightly cooler than those on the Aconcagua valley floor, with harvest usually taking place a fortnight later. Ravines between the plots are used to create habitats for flora and fauna. Farming has been biodynamic since the mid 2000s.
  • Fruit is hand picked at delivered to the winery in small boxes where it is manually sorted. Grapes are mostly fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a small percentage vinified in new French oak barrels. Maceration times vary between six and 33 days, depending on the variety and the development of individual lot. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures in new French oak barrels over 22 months.
  • The Aconcagua River runs east from the charming costal town of Valparaiso and bisects the land creating the valley after which it was named. While alluvial soils predominate the Aconcagua Valley along its river throughout, its east-west flow creates drastically different conditions on each of its ends. Its western, seaside vineyards, with clay and stony soils upon gently rolling hills, produce cool-climate varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Its inner region is one of Chile’s hottest and produces some of its best red wines. Panquehue in the inner Aconcagua is the site of Chile’s first Syrah vines, planted in 1993.
  • Vintage ~ The 2015 vintage in Chile's Aconcagua Valley was a warm and dry year that produced wines with more fruit and higher alcohol. The 2015 Seña wine from this region is considered to be a classic and one of the best vintages of the Chilean icon.
