100-Point by Rich Cook.

With ZD’s own certified organic Rutherford Estate as the backbone, this wine is showing beautifully now, but will also age gracefully for many years to come. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, and dark plum mingle with subtle hints of vanilla, anise, tobacco, and a touch of clove. The palate is full, rich, and bursting with dark fruit. Lush, well-balanced tannins carry the wine through to an incredibly long and silky finish. The oak is present but well-integrated and gives the wine an added layer of complexity. Only 23 barrels of this wine were produced. Enjoy!

  • ZD Wines is a producer based in the Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley in California. Its most notable wine is Abacus, a solera-style bottling that blends together all vintages of the company's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • ZD Wines was established in 1969 by former aerospace engineers Norman DeLeuze and Gino Zepponi. They wanted to make wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, so they set up the winery in an old barn in Sonoma, and sourced fruit from what is now the Napa Valley side of Carneros. They named the wine ZD, not only to signify the initials of their last names, but also as an acronym for Zero Defects, a term used at the quality control program at their former job at Aerojet.
  • The winery has experimented with several grape varieties over the years, but eventually decided to narrow its focus to just Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The portfolio also includes small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and a Rosé produced from Pinot Noir. Grapes are sourced from Carneros, Napa Valley's most southern appellation, which benefits from a distinct diurnal temperature shift and a cool fog from the San Pablo Bay.
